  • The visual analogue scale for rating, ranking, and paired comparison (VAS-RRP): A new technique for measuring traits

    期刊論文2018

Traditionally, the visual analogue scale (VAS) has been proposed to overcome the limitations of ordinal measures from Likert-type scales. However, the function of VASs to overcome the limitations of response styles to Likert-type scales has not yet been addressed. Previous research using ranking and paired comparisons to compensate for the response styles of Likert-type scales has suffered from limitations, such as that the total score of ipsative measures is a constant that cannot be analyzed by means of many common statistical techniques. In this study we propose a new scale, called the Visual Analogue Scale for Rating, Ranking, and Paired-Comparison (VAS-RRP), which can be used to collect rating, ranking, and paired-comparison data simultaneously, while avoiding the limitations of each of these data collection methods. The characteristics, use, and analytic method of VAS-RRPs, as well as how they overcome the disadvantages of Likert-type scales, ranking, and VASs, are discussed. On the basis of analyses of simulated and empirical data, this study showed that VAS-RRPs improved reliability, response style bias, and parameter recovery. Finally, we have also designed a VAS-RRP Generator for researchers’ construction and administration of their own VAS-RRPs.

  • The influence of a gesture-based learning approach on preschoolers' learning performance, motor skills, and motion behaviors

    期刊論文2018

This study developed a gesture-based learning approach to build a virtual interactive learning environment for preschoolers by combining a gesture-based computing device and a game-based learning model. Using sequential analysis, this study investigated how this approach influenced children's learning performance, motor skills, and motion behaviors. A quasi-experiment was conducted with 142 kindergarten-level-3 preschoolers. The results showed that the gesture-based learning approach improved the students' learning performance and motor skills compared with the traditional activity-based learning approach. The main learning pattern showed that the preschoolers controlled their body motion behaviors and movements to learning cognitive knowledge, which achieving a flow state that improved preschoolers' learning performance and motor skills. In addition, the main motion pattern showed that the preschoolers interacted with the game by coordinating their body movement with the projected human skeleton's movement, which improved their motor skills.

  • The influence of a mathematics problem-solving training system on first-year middle school students

    期刊論文2018

This study explored problem-solving in middle school, focusing on how students use tools to solve problems when working on mathematical tasks. The Problem-solving Assessment, Diagnosis, and Remedial Instruction (PSADRI) system was designed and developed as an individual teaching tool to support mathematics education, foster students' ability to solve problems. A quasi-experimental design was conducted during five weeks. The 153 students who participated in this experiment were divided into an experimental group (86 students who used the PSADRI system) and a control group (67 students who received traditional instruction). The results revealed that the students who used the PSADRI system achieved greater learning performances in mathematics and improved problem-solving ability compared with the students who received traditional instruction. Using the question-guided training function in the system, the students in the experimental group used the drill-and-practice strategy to solve math problems step by step to achieve mastery in mathematics learning. Moreover, the students' learning performance in the experimental group was enhanced and their problem-solving ability was improved. The major contributions of this study were the improvement in middle school students' academic achievement in mathematics and problem-solving ability and enhanced interest in mathematics learning via the PSADRI system, an individual teaching system.
