This study is the subproject one of the Research on the Development of Corpus-based Learning Dictionary in Subject Areas for Primary and Secondary School Students. The purpose of this study is to design, with the application of corpus, the compilation model of learning dictionary in natural science for primary and secondary school students, to implement the design model on the compilation of the dictionary, and to do users test.
The meaning of “Learning Dictionary” refers to the type of dictionary that are designed for primary and secondary school students to use in studying natural science. Students’ pre-knowledge will be taken into consideration on choice of words. The editing will apply problem-solving skills. Information will be presented by using approaches that students are familiar with. “Compilation Design Model” means a series of process including corpus sources choosing, words selection, words interpretation, editing and information presentation.
There is no learning dictionary in natural science particularly designed for primary and secondary school students so far. The current natural science dictionaries are subjective in word selection and interpretation. The ways information is presented are not based on the students’ needs. Nor do technologies be implemented.
NAER COCT corpus will be implemented in this research, and the Taiwan primary and secondary school natural science textbooks corpus will be constructed in this project. Based on the compilation design model, some examples will be compiled using corpus and the tools developed by other subprojects. After that, some students will be interviewed in order to further refine the model.
